About Me

Teaching music at Bartlett Elementary is a wonderful opportunity. As a native of Knoxville, I received my degree from the University of Tennessee. I have taught music for 22 years in public school systems in Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. My certification and teaching experience includes general music, vocal, and instrumental for K-12. I have also enjoyed working as an organist and choir director for many years.

My family includes my husband, Robert, who is the Assistant Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee, and a daughter, Stephanie, who is married and working on her post doctoral program with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I entered education because of my love for children and music. The challenge of learning and the creativity needed to be a good teacher have made this an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I have found that all children can be successful in music because it creates a unique setting for learning. Music not only builds self-esteem, teamwork, and discipline; but it contributes to every child's cognitive development. There is a direct correlation between improved SAT scores and the length of time spent studying the arts. Those who studied the arts for more years scored 60 points higher on verbal and 41 points higher on math portions of the SAT than students with no course work or experience in the arts for a combined total for 101 points higher. My goals as a music educator are to encourage children to learn, enjoy, and appreciate many genres of music, and to experience music on many levels. Some of the ways student needs can be met in my classroom will be explored through singing, movement, Orff instruments, piano, recorder, computer, and many musical activities. As a teacher, I am determined to ensure that my students receive the best possible education in the area of music.
